Behind each joke is a kernel of truth. That is what makes them so funny. Our first t-shirt from the Placebo Journal called the "MRSA shirt" is a prime example. On the front it says, "I went to the hospital and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.." and on the back it says, "...and MRSA". I figured you really would have to have some balls to wear this thing and that is why I liked it so much . But where did the idea come from? Ask Betsy McCaughey, a former Lt. Governor of NY, who wrote a recent editorial for the WSJ. Many infections are unavoidable when the people in charge put their minds to it. She lists many hospitals who have cut down on these problems to the point where they are rare. I truly appreciate her line "lawsuits are not the best way to improve patient care". Agreed. Her real issue is hospitals being complacent about hygiene. Betsy, if you are ego surfer (hey, we all are), send me an email and I will get you a free t-shirt. It never hurts to laugh.
