Save Money. Live Better. Offer Health Insurance.

Walmart is in the news for jumping on Obama's bandwagon. They are embracing "President Obama's call for requiring all large employers to offer health insurance to their workers". I am getting too cynical in my old ago because I really am suspicious of this. The first thing I think of is what angle Walmart is going for here and what is their ulterior motive? The USA Today article states that Walmart is trying to improve its image regarding worker treatment so I guess that is a good thing. They also want to block any proposal that would have employers pay the Medicaid costs of new hires. Maybe that is the issue right there. Or maybe requiring large employers to pay health insurance for their workers (which I agree with) would make a bunch of companies go bust. That would leave less companies standing. Now who would that benefit? Hmmm, I wonder.

Did I read you right Doug, that you favor requiring large employers to pay for health insurance? That was how the third party mess started during WWII. Roping in big boys like Wal-Mart, Gov't Motors, et al will be the setup for them dumping the cost on to ObamaCare. It should not be for doctors, voters, or any other group to tell private businesses what benefits to offer; doing so will have the sort of unintended economics that we have seen for the past 6 decades.

Large companies get tax breaks on their part of the group health insurance premium. WalMart's request to block employers from paying Medicaid costs for new hires appear to be a smokescreen for their insurance plan. How many full time hourly WalMart workers do you think can afford to pay the premium for family coverage? I suspect it would be a very small number...

The data from Walmart is that "90% of our employees are already registered with major medical insurance program". What they didn't say was that only 52% of the workers are having it paid for by Walmart; the other nearly half has MMI through their own plan or a spouse's plan. Not the "white-knight" they try to portray themselves.
