Dr. Jason Newsom, a 38-year-old former Army doctor, has been speaking out about bad foods for a few years now. He mocked KFC, hamburgers, sugars drinks, etc. Recently he parodied "America Runs on Dunkin'," the doughnut chain's slogan, with: "America Dies on Dunkin' " on his electric sign for all to see and he got himself canned. Part of the issue is that he works for the Bay County Health Department in Florida and he is paid is paid jointly by the state and the county. A county commissioner who owns a doughnut shop and two lawyers who own a new Dunkin' Donuts on Panama City Beach were able to threaten enough big wigs to get Dr. Newsom fired. As the article says, "His job primarily involves educating the public about health issues — swine flu, AIDS and the like — but he also decided to address the dangers of glazed, sprinkled and jelly-filled treats." As someone who uses parodies in the Placebo Journal to push similar agendas, I have to applaud this dude. The only difference is that I am not doing it at my medical office but as a side venture. Even so, you go Newsom! I may have to bring back my Tenesmus award for him as I haven't found anyone else worthy in years.
