The other day someone asked me why I was not for a single payer healthcare system. I have forgotten just why I instinctively felt this way and have trying to think back why this was. There are quite a few things that governments do well but not all. I remember a situation locally when the local government took over the Water Agency. It had been run for many years by PG& E. It ran well and whenever a dispute arose one had an agency to complain to. Since its take over by our County it has become the “Placer County Water Agency”. This agency has acquired a fancy office, many high priced employees and there is no longer anyone to complain to if things go wrong or policies are adopted that we don’t like. This agency has become far larger than when the same sized operation was run by PG&E.
Governmental operations frequently become operational giants, encumbered by their very size as well as the bureaucracy that operates it. Who can one complain to other than the politicians who created and mismanaged it in the first place?
