Poll Medicine

In another insane twist to the mammogram controversy, the USA Today published a piece entitled "Women insistent on cancer screening". The article was based on a poll they put out which asked women their opinions of the new recommendations to raise the starting age to 50. Would you believe that 76% disagreed with it? Wow. Read the article and you can see all the other misconceptions people have about the disease and the panel's motives. More importantly, however, is how stupid it is to have a poll about this issue. This is NOT about a candidate running for office. Are we to determine future medical recommendations on whether it is popular or not? Of course the masses are going to want earlier mammograms. Heck, why not start them at age 30? Or age 20? Even better, let's get mammograms in utero!
