It is nice to know that the economy is coming back and the plastic surgeons are making enough money again. And yes, I am speaking out of jealousy. What cracks me up about this Washington Post article is how they go out of their way to point out how good looking the plastic surgeons were at a recent conference. Let me go on record and say that you will never see the same description at the Annual Scientific Assembly for family docs. That is, of course, unless frumpy clothes and Birkenstocks go back in style.

doug, the article sucked! it sounded like it was written by a frat boy being snarky and not wanting to learn the medical terminology. Or someone dating the PR woman for the ASAPS. I have been to some of these meetings (as a guest) and they are not all that good looking, some of them just think they are. And yes, they get a good deal because the doctors can go retail, but they do have the same malpractice worries and litigation hungry patients as the rest of us. Cut them, they bleed! The article did not say how much they whine about slower times or how socially maladjusted some of them are. But Doug, I think I did post this in a previous posting: We need to stop wasting our time complaining about each other. I heard the head of the AFP interviewed on NPR radio a few weeks ago about cardiologists and their "outrageously high" salaries. The more we have dissension in the ranks, the more we stand to lose by the real predators of the markets out there with all of the powers against us. Instead of complaining about the ASAPS, we should see what they do that can be emulated. Certainly, many FP's are getting into the injectible and laser game and the consumers seem to be fine with it. I am not saying that is the answer, but it is an option for people who might want to try it!
Doug,
I absolutely agree, let's not divide and conquer by complaining about another specialty. I'm one of "those" plastic surgeons (ex trauma surgeon) who is double boarded and although I do some cosmetics, most of the PS in this country don't do exclusively cosmetics. Unlike folks in Beverly Hills, Miami or New York City, most of the ASPS members do reconstruction too. We all have been hit by lowering of reimbursements, we all have been subjected to the lies etc of the insurance companies, and we are just as likely to be up at 3am working on a crushed hand, or a lacerated face on a "self, read NO, pay patient" So, I'm tired of whining about plastic surgeons, we aren't the bad guy here, we're just trying to get by like everyone else, and it does us NO good to try to maul each other. And, that includes you Doug. As for the non plastic surgeons doing "cosmetics" in their office after a weekend course, which took years of training for me to learn, guess who get's the phone call when things don't go right??
You all need to read my blog again. First, I admit jealousy. Second, I rip on us family docs for our outfits.
I agree about the fashion sense of some of our colleagues. I actually keep a pair of boiled wool clogs that I wore during residency to remind me of those fond times :) now that I've crossed to the dark side of EHR Sales and have to wear a suit every day (and make twice as much money)
