Dr. Fred Plum, who was a pioneer in neurology, recently passed away. His legacy was a new understanding of the care of comatose patients and coined both the the terms “persistent vegetative state,” and "locked-in syndrome". Many a controversy had arisen over how to treat these types of patients. For those that don't know, in a persistent vegetative state, patients look conscious but are unconscious. In the locked-in state, patients look unconscious but are conscious. To salute his work, I decided to write an epitaph for his gravestone:
Some people look alive but aren't really there
Other people look dead but truly are aware
It looks like I am neither so you can stop poking around
Leave my body be and bury it underground
