I get asked for medical notes all the time. Sometimes patients are going through hard times and I understand that. They haven't paid their electricity bill and need a note from me to bail them out. Many are legitimate (they need their nebulizer or oxygen) but many are not. I want to be helpful but I don't want to be abused. It is an awkward position to be put in but I do feel a sense of responsibility to make sure that a patient's request is truthful. Believe it or not, some of them can bend the truth just a little. We need to be careful, however. News out of New Hampshire is that a woman died because her electricity was cut off and she therefore couldn't run her oxygen tank. Now we know that the cutting of this utility is because the customer hasn't paid in two months. No matter. Someone will pay for this one. Expect a lawsuit to be announced within a few months. Will it be against the power company or the doctor? My money is on .....both.
