
I am sure you have seen those anti-tobacco ads on TV. They are continuously aired due to settlements that the tobacco companies have made because of all their indiscretions over the years. With this in mind, I was a bit surprised to hear that the tobacco companies are doing it again! New Zealand researchers have found them using video-sharing sites like YouTube to promote videos which are "consistent with indirect marketing activity by tobacco companies or their proxies". These videos, some professionally made, basically highlight tobacco use and guess what? They are getting big hits for these covert ads. The tobacco companies are adamantly denying doing any of this. Ken Garcia, spokesman for Marlboro-makers Philip Morris USA, said the firm did not "post cigarette brand marketing on YouTube". Hmmm, now where have I heard that before?
