Many people have accused the trend towards weight-loss operations as an easy way out. It looks like our friends over the pond are thinking the same thing. The National Health Service's Information Centre showed 4,246 procedures for obesity were carried out in England in 2008-9, up from 480 in 2003-4. This was an increase of 785 percent! There are many issues to debate here. Do the surgeries save the system money in the long term? Are people just skipping the alternative methods of losing weight? The biggest issue of all, though, is that people are just getting bigger and bigger. The reality is that the burden of the obese just may do in the whole system and unless we start eating right then doing baby lap bands is the only way to fix it.
