I have heard many lawyers, in defense of our current malpractice situation, claim that defensive medicine doesn't really exist. These arguments were flying around during the making of our health care reform bill. Funny thing, the final result showed no appreciable tort reform. Well, here is some interesting news. The use of CT and MRI scans for injury-related emergency room visits in the United States has tripled since 1998. There may be other variables that have led to this increase (trying to move patients out of the ER quicker, poor diagnostic skills, etc.) but the bottom line is that we cannot afford to continue on this same path. Pretty soon, instead of walking through metal detectors, patients will just be walking through some type of CT or MRI scans just to get IN to the ER.
