More than 20% of children tested for bone problems by an orthopedic surgeon in Southampton, England showed signs of rickets. This is a disease which causes bowed legs as well stunted growth. It comes from too little vitamin D which basically comes from too little sunlight. I would gather that we have the same problem here in America. The reason this is happening is because the dermatologists have gotten us so scared of the sun or because children are just sitting inside all day playing video games or both. What's funny is that doctor in the piece said that his results were "very reminiscent of 17th Century England". When I read that I thought to myself, what's next, scurvy? And then it hit me how bad our diets are and maybe that is a possibility, too. A circle of life kind of thing.
