Let's face it, sex sells. I remember my good friend telling me he was at a medical conference where these blue-haired women would get people to easily let them swab their inside cheek for DNA samples. My first thought was, "Good for them for using old ladies". The funny thing was that these were not your typical "blue hairs" that we doctors see in the office. They were models hired by UMass Memorial Lab. It was a brilliant strategy and marketing plan and they were getting so many potential bone marrow donors that it was almost overwhelming. There was one little problem, though. The donors were told the tests cost about $100 and would be paid for by their insurance companies. Instead, they were billing their insurance companies over $4000 per test. Dohhhh! Let's just say that I give the UMass Memorial Lab an A for effort. They may have gotten a little greedy but they sure know how to work us men. How sad are we?
