Free Jenny Craig

A study supported by Jenny Craig was published in JAMA and showed that the women in the intervention groups who received "free one-on-one weight-loss counseling for 2 years and were educated on recommendations for a nutritionally sound, reduced-calorie diet with 20%-30% of calories from fat, and 30 minutes of physical exercise at least 5 days per week and received free access to prepackaged prepared foods from Jenny Craig Inc. to help them achieve their nutritional goals" lost about 15 pounds after two years. The cost, if the patients paid, would have been around $6K over two years for the food. Read the article and at the end you will see how Rena Wing PhD thinks that supplying Jenny Craig products on the insurance company's or government's dime would be a great idea. I am going crazy here? Six-thousand bucks for 15 pounds over two years? And it's not even guaranteed! And we wonder why healthcare costs so much.
