Walmart Rolling Back Healthcare Benefits

Walmart, citing higher costs, is scaling back healthcare benefits for part-time employees and increasing the premiums for full-time employees.   They are denying this is due to the new Affordable Health Care Act but it sure makes you wonder.   This is now a trend in the industry.  Employers are trying to get out of the "health insurance" business.  I get that.  They really shouldn't have been involved in the first place.  The question is whether this group of more and more dropped individual workers will be able to get insurance at affordable rates on their own?  Yes, if allowed to truly shop across state lines.  Yes, if managed care companies start competing for their business.   This Walmart "event" is only the tip of the iceberg.   It sucks for those workers.  It will suck for all of us if there is no competition and a new and bloated government option is all that remains.  It won't work and will be way too expensive.

Why is being able to buy insurance across state lines such a big deal?? Why would a Minnesota resident want to buy health or Medigap insurance from a California company with no local agent? Insurance reimbursement is so complex that I would want a local agent to complain to about coverage issues or other problems with the insurance, a local advocate.
