Common Sense and Compassion by Stella Fitzgibbons MD

So I'm expected to make a 90+ yo patient with advanced dementia a full code? Come ON, people--how long have you known that Granny is over 75? Do you think she's going to enjoy having her hands tied down so she can't pull out the ET tube? Or do you just get a big ego trip from "not giving up"?

I am grateful that I live in a state that has a "futile care" law, where after enough second opinions and a vote by the ethics committee we can stop people from forcing doctors to torture their alleged loved ones. Why the @#$% are common sense and compassion in such short supply?
