I found this article in the WSJ to be pretty intriguing. The exodus of doctors out of Cuba is pretty impressive. Heck, the ones that come here can't even practice as physicians but it is still worth the risk for them to escape. That being said, there is an obvious attempt by America to disrupt Cuba's medical system by allowing, or enticing, these defections. The real truth, however, is that Cuban doctors get paid next to nothing. Their salaries in Cuba top out at about $25 a month! When serving overseas, they get their Cuban salaries, plus a $50-per-month stipend and keep the the overseas salaries (from $150 to $1,000 a month). That is why so many doctors want to go on these medical missions or "brigades" in the first place. Then the taste of money changes their perspective and, well, you know the rest of the story. Once again, capitalism trumps Communism.
