In central Vietnam, over 160 drug addicts escaped from a supposed rehabilitation facility. The detention center houses 398 inmates, including 48 women, who are all addicted to heroin or other substances. During their break out, the addicts overpowered the guards and fled to a sugarcane field. Unfortunately, the police were able to capture almost all of them with dogs and tear gas. I am not saying this doesn’t happen here in America. In fact, I remember an episode of Celebrity Rehab where they were able to subdue Danny Baldwin with two cheeseburgers and a shake from the In-N-Out burger.
Addiction is a major problem in all countries. It is a human tragedy. Though I don’t think the Vietnamese way (holding addicts for up to two years in rehab centers which are basically hard labor camps) is the right way, I am not sure a methadone clinic on every corner is either. There just seems no end to it. Should lifelong methadone be the goal or should there be a better plan to get them drug free? Send some comments my way on your thoughts.
