Referrals by Ted Bacharach MD (retired)

Once upon a time when a patient needed a specialist, the primary care physician (once a family doctor) recommended a colleague he thought was the best for the problem the patient faced. In addition to this, patients also talked to their family and friends to find out whom they would recommend. The patient had a decision to make and a choice.

At the present time recommendations emanate from HMO’s, hospitals, companies, health insurance plans and television ads. Their choice of recommendations are for physicians who have agreed to accept their reimbursement schedule. The choice is generic with quality, expertise, and capability as secondary considerations. The patient has to look at his or her insurance to find out who is a provider who will accept his or her insurance. Good luck!!!
