
And the games continue. Not only is the government jumping into the unproven "quality measures" department but they are now adding a new measure. It is looking at how much it is being spent per beneficiary to each hospital. They are calling this new statistic "efficiency" and they are going to look at (and penalize for) the "costs generated during a hospital stay, the three days before it, and the 90 days afterward". I don't see how individual doctors' pay were mentioned but I am sure they will be penalized as well as they are the ones who are alone taking care of the patient three days before and 90 days afterward. Hmmmm. That's weird. Nothing about penalizing the patient for going home after a CHF exacerbation and eating a bag of chips a day until they get sick again. Oh, well, we all know that is our fault. Remember, accountability should only be one-sided.
