An MSNBC story describes a NOW rally outside Senator Rubio's Tampa office to oppose any changes to our old friend Medicare. The story features an 88 year old lady who fears that any change in the program would force her "to choose between going to the eye doctor and going to the dentist in a month." The end of the report, in fairness, does note that she would be grandmothered in under old law and would not lose any benefits.
The logic of the protesters is that any cut to an elderly woman's benefits constitutes a "war against women." Since women live longer than men, I suppose that NOW means us to regard females as the majority users of Medicare. Fine. In the past nearly half century, Medicare has resulted in massive medical price inflation, exacerbated by crazy regulatory overhead. How many younger workers have been priced out of affordable health care by Medicare's influence? How many employers have been forced to hire fewer workers due to rising health care costs? How many doctors have said to hell with it, and are no longer available to their communities? How many non-retired citizens have been bankrupted by Monopoly-money hospital bills? How many of us will suffer in the impending financial catastrophe fueled by entitlement spending? Using NOW's logic, hasn't this been a retired womens' war against taxpayers? Of course, that sort of hyperbole would be silly, right?
